RehomeYourStuff Blog

Update

By owner | March 12, 2008

Things have been a bit quiet lately with regards to press as I’ve been busy working on other ‘paid’ for projects - as this site is a freebie and also done in our spare time, sometimes it has to take a back seat!

There are lots of new listings though - people are now coming back regularly and rehoming their unwanted things so I’m very pleased about that. Here are a few of the cool things that we have seen this week:

There are lots of other items that are new, don’t forget you can search by County or just use the browse categories as the items that are near to you will be within 20 miles of your postcode!

Homes and Gardens

By owner | March 5, 2008

We had a lovely feature in Homes and Gardens Monthly Newsletter, which also has a link to their website.

You can see the feature on the Homes and Gardens Site.

In other news the site is going well, we are pressing on with a few minor changes, most notably we have added a Poll feature so we can gather people’s opinions on different elements of recycling. We’ve also added a few new buttons and some other minor design changes.

Is there a feature you’d like to see? Write and tell us.

The Environment Agency Landfill finder!

By owner | February 14, 2008

I have been surfing the net looking at other interesting environmental sites (obviously with a view to cross promotion!) and found this great search tool on the Environment Agency Website.

It allows you to put in your postcode and see where all the landfill sites are local to you. I was quite surprised to see how many old ones are out there too. I really hope we can slow the amount of waste we produce in this country, it’s not just about rehoming old items, it’s about recycling glass, plastic, paper, batteries, metal, wood, clothes and more in order to stop the human race from killing this planet.

We have had a mention on Alan Knights Environment Now Know blog.

And on The Getaway Blog too!

If you want to link to us from your blog, don’t forget we have a selection of banners and buttons if you want to use something graphical, but a text link works just as well! We will give you a shout back if you tell us about it.

Environmental Blogs

By owner | February 10, 2008

I want to give a shout to to a blogger that I made friends with this weekend.

http://blog.environmentsolutions.co.uk

He writes an interesting blog that covers a large range of environmental issues both in the UK and on a global scale. I just found out through his latest post that London is going to introduce a new LEZ charge! Hadn’t heard of this one before so a bit of searching and I’m now fully educated in this new tax that the Mayor is introducing. Don’t they take enough tax from our petrol?

Anyway back to the blog… There are some interesting comments on recycling electronic waste too - what do we do with monitors that have died? The last one I had that gave up on me ended up at the tip, I felt terribly guilty as I’m sure there must be a better way to get rid of something that is no longer useful like this.

I also learned about Landfill community funds, something I think I will have to investigate more.

All in all a great site though, I shall be bookmarking this one and reading it often!

Our First Press cutting!

By owner | February 8, 2008

The Surrey and Hants Star is a local newspaper to me, the paper boy lovingly throws it on the floor outside my door (even though we have a perfectly good letterbox) in all weathers. But it’s free and it provides a good read over the weekend for local news.

I have scanned in the front cover you can view it here.

So a lovely pic of us, the ‘avid’ recyclers from Church Crookham and some great local press for ReHomeYourStuff.  The stats on the site are definitely up so I know it has been good press for us.  I’ll post more after the weekend, I get the feeling it’s going to be a busy one as a few of the items I listed last weekend are already hot property and in demand!

I had three people this afternoon write and request the 3 saucepan set, so I know they have a new home to go to where they will be used and not stored on top of my kitchen cupboards!

I have more things to list too, another job for the weekend! It’s a toss up at the moment on spending time on site development, or digging through the attic to pair down some of the years of junk hoarding.

We’ve had a few great items listed this week so far, here are five that were listed today:

I wonder what the weekend will bring!

ReHomeYourStuff.co.uk gets a mention in the local paper.

By owner | February 7, 2008

The Surrey and Hampshire Star have done a small piece on the site and put us on the front cover!

You can read the online version here - I will scan in the paper later and put it up tomorrow.

I am hoping that this story will raise awareness of rehomeyourstuff in the local area to me, and we can grow the site out from there.

A New banner to use to link to us

By owner | February 3, 2008

It’s not animated, or fancy and it doesn’t flip out at you when you least expect it. It’s just a simple banner that was created for visual effect.

Link to us!

By owner | January 4, 2008

Yesterday we added a new page to the site so that you can put a banner on your website if you have one (and want to!).

We put up 4 banners that are the standard 468×60 size, and a PDF that is a flyer that can be printed for local community notice boards.

You will find a link to this area in the footer navigation on every page or you can get to it from here:

Happy New Year!

By owner | January 1, 2008

Welcome to 2008! This is the start of it all for us, as we only really pushed the site live a week ago, so it is barely off the ground! We have had a few things happening already though, as we have had a few registrations and several listings from the public - so a big welcome and thank you to those of you who have done so already.

We’ve had a portable tv, horse manure, baby sleeping bags, and a Persona contraceptive device listed already - as well as a wooden bed frame, and several items listed by myself (wildcat).

The big push now is to encourage people to list their old things! It’s the New Year, so a new start and out with the old as they say! I’m sure there are a thousand hairdryers, cd’s, videos, old jumpers and other such items that will no longer be used as they were replaced just last week at Christmas.

If this sounds like you - then it’s time to register with us and get listing!

Update on site changes

By owner | December 29, 2007

We added a few new features today, an update to the about us page was the first change, to make the text for interesting and to add a splash of colour to a rather dull page! This includes our new four step process:

Find those items you no longer have a need for.

Register with rehomeyourstuff and list them with us.

Ease back into your armchair and wait for someone to request them from you.

Email the requestor with details of how they can pick their stuff up.

We also added in some helpful listing tips on the List an Item page, as well as a few other CSS changes to make the site look prettier.

The site has launched!

By owner | December 28, 2007

It all started when I had a tree in my garden cut back, a neighbour asked what we were going to do with the logs that were created, to which I replied ‘I don’t know, I hope someone will just come and take them away!”. He then suggested a website that does something similar to ours only it didn’t have search, or the ability to add photos and you could only see items in your local area, among other things.

I thought it was a fantastic idea, but it just wasn’t user friendly, so I sat down on the 24th September 2007 and wrote a spec for a site that would allow people to list items with photos, and for it to be fully searchable by postcode and county, so you can see items in all areas of the country too.

My husband Chris is a very accomplished web developer, so he set about writing the code that would bring it to life. (Bear in mind he has a full time job so only gets to work on this during the evening and weekends!).

Roll forward to December - Christmas is coming and the site is just about functional with a few bugs in here and there. We hired the services of a good friend who is an expert in QA for websites - we all worked together at Amazon.co.uk a few years back.

We officially pushed the site live on 22nd December 2007!

Two days were spent going over the live site and adding in data for the search engines, in order to optimise the site so that Google will pick it up and give us a good position. I’m not going to give away all the tricks of the trade in here as this is also one of the things I do for a living as a freelance marketing consultant, but I will say that as a result of the work we did on this (and we’re not done yet!) Google spidered our site on December 25th (just after the Queen’s speech!) and we currently have the number 1 spot for the search term rehome stuff!

I have also done a few other things to help get the site moving, as this is the hard part - getting people to an empty site! So if you are reading this - I’m sure you can find 1 or 2 things you can list on the site and help get it going…. please…..
